Altar Butter

Three Lives, One day   by Elizabeth Ellis

It was Easter morning. As the Brazilian sun warmed up the little village, Baby Jimmy was enjoying the heat and all the fuss he was given. Jennifer, on the other hand, was experiencing a whole new feeling. Joy, pride yet a bit of nostalgia mixed together. It had been a long way since Carlos walked out of her life. Nevertheless, she tightened up her upper lip and distributes favors of her mom's trademark butter cookies despite the silent harsh whispers of some ladies who still question her unmarried shame. With quick glances towards Jimmy, she carries her duty sturdily as it was a family tradition to do it. When her bundle of joy finally reaches her again, she blinked away tears and vowing never to let him go.

Jennifer carried the baby to the altar. With every step towards the crib, she was bought back to the time when her boyfriend had walked out on her when she told him she was pregnant. Angered and ravaged at that moment, she had attempted to abort it. But now as she kisses the baby's cheek, her eyes began to tear and she took back all the thoughts of that selfish desire. "My beloved family and friends, we are now going to start the prayer. In the name of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit..." Jennifer made the sign of the cross and bowed her head to pray.

It was Easter morning. Somewhere along the suburbs of Calcutta, 17 year old Nalini was scolding her twin sister Asha as she was trying to tie a ribbon on her head. Mala, a friend of the sisters were watching nearby. Sister Anita suddenly appeared at the door.

"Mala, why did you leave your sash in the lavatory? And Asha and Nalini, it is already late! Mother Priyanka's is already waiting."

The now-quiet girls were dressed in white hand-me down dresses. Ascertained of their tidiness, Sister Anita led them towards the small chapel of St Theresa's Orphanage across the garden. The chapel has been recently restored by donations, but it only accented the desperate squalor of the rundown schoolrooms next to it. The noontime garden itself was in full bloom with jasmines and azaleas that Easter morning, thanks to the loving care by the nuns and their students in the rundown school next door. The girls forgot their guise of adulthood and skipped gaily on the crazy garden pavement.

Sister Anita eyed at them and wanted to remind them on Mother's Priyanka's about behaving. However, she did not want to spoil their fun as they are the God's special children for the day. It had been a hard long life for them. Begging on the streets and abandoned by people they love. St Theresa was a place of shelter and haven for children like them and Anita was one of the first orphans who grew up there. It offers her hope and faith rather than being confronted with violence and abuse.

Mother Priyanka's kind voice broke her reverie, "There you are, my dears! Now, before we go on, let us distribute these gifts to your new younger brothers and sisters."

Asha hung back shyly, but Mala and Nalini nudged her forward together. Their eyes rounded at Mother's largess; chocolates!! Everyone gave a bright smile as each came forward one by one and received the rare treats.

Mother then stretched her arms over them. "Thank you Lord, for gathering us here today. I would like to offer these three beautiful girls to you as a part of Your family..." It was a wondrous beginning.

It was Easter morning. But it was just like any other day for Seng. His lungs were killing him and taking his life bit by bit everyday. He ignored the pain and turned his attention on the wooden crucifix above his bed.

As Seng began to reminiscence the past, he had to bite back his tears as he remembers the days of his youth. Back then, he was as fit and enjoying life to the fullest. Days could not have been much better with his business going well in the South East Asia Region and his beloved Ai Ling by his side. What a memorable moment it was when Meng was born. Alas, when Minna strode between Seng and his wide, it all fell apart.

When Ai Ling found out, she filed for divorce despite his begging and pleading, leaving Meng with him.

Minna, like an unwelcome guest at a party, began to tearing down pieces of Seng. He was too blinded by lust to see the toll it was taking on his business and his little boy. Eventually, he lost everything. His son walked out of his life after he became a victim of his father's abuse and insults. Seng was filled with feelings of hate against God and started to blame everything on him. He became a slave to drugs, women and alcohol as he walked across life in a breezy mood. However, his unhealthy lifestyle came back and strikes him at the weakest part. It was a six letter word which jolted Seng from his current life and began to regret on his actions. Cancer.

He had fervently begged the nurses to bring a priest to him that Easter evening, for a chance to repent before he drew his last breath. There was a soft knock at the door. A young priestly man entered and held his hand. Seng looked up wonderingly at the familiar face, tears welling in his eyes.

"Father, I need to confess my sins. Can you help me?"
"The Lord forgives you, but can you forgive me, dad?"

Forgiveness and repentance is your way of saying to God that you want to be loved and to be saved. By acknowledging the chance of doing so, we are granting ourselves the best baptism favor and sharing it with others would only make them radiant in the light of Christ.
