Koutoubia Mosque - A Chef-D'Oeuvre near your Exclusive Riad in Marrakech by Siham Ben Chikh
The construction of the Koutoubia Mosque, or "Mosque of booksellers", started under the Berber dynasty of the Almoravids in 1120, but it was substantially rebuilt starting from 1162 under the Almohad Amir Abu Yusuf Yaqub al-Mansur. It eventually became one of the most characteristic buildings in this style and the most distinctive mosque in Marrakech. Its name comes from the fact that it hosted the bazaar's merchants' manuscripts.
The "mosque of the booksellers" was organized on a T plan. This tradition has existed since the construction of the mosque of Kairouan in Fez the ninth century, and is also found in Spain. It is in fact an Arab hypostyle plan, with a large courtyard surrounded by a portico and a prayer room with columns. The aisles are perpendicular to the "qibla" wall, the centre is wider, and the bay along the "qibla" wall is also magnified, forming a T, hence the name. The "mihrab", which is the place where the imam prays, is like a very deep niche, and the minaret, 69 metres high, takes a square form like all mosques in the Maghreb.
The Almohad dynasty, which adhered to the Maliki rite, sponsored a rather austere architecture, reflecting certain asceticism. The Koutoubia Mosque is not an exception and its sobriety stands out.
The minaret was later decorated and now we can see an important work of interlaced arches (sebka). At its very top we can see three gilt balls that symbolize the earthly, the celestial and the spiritual world. It served, among others, as a model for the Giralda minaret in Seville.
The external decoration of the minaret is different on all four sides: painting on plaster floral ornaments and inscriptions, a network of tracery in relief when interspersed paintings, ceramics band of white thread on turquoise background, sometimes with arches. It is built of native sandstone slate quarries. And it is beautifully proportioned: 12, 80 meters a side by 69 meters high with the lantern (77 meters from the tip of the arrow), with an exterior wall of 2.50 meters. In the centre of the tower, another core contains six rooms. Around it, a gently sloping ramp leads to the walkway. The platform is surrounded by a walkway protected by serrated railing parapets. The lantern appears as a second minaret standing on the foreground. On top of it there is a metal rod to which four golden balls of decreasing size are attached, the largest with 6 meters in diameter. They are made of gilded copper plates riveted together.
