There are many materials to choose from if you are having a piece of metal artwork made for you. Even if you are going to buy from a store or artist, it is good to know the different materials commonly used as well as the strengths and weaknesses of them. Some materials have their own special characteristics, so if you are buying a piece of metal artwork for your home or office and you want it to be there for awhile, make sure that the materials it is made of are suitable to what your goals are.
One of the least commonly used materials is stainless steel. While stainless steel is popular for kitchen appliances, jewelry, and other uses, it is a less convenient building material for metal artwork. One of the reasons is that it requires special glazing in order for it to keep the right finish on it, especially if this is a piece that you intend to use outdoors. The prices for steel also fluctuate, so make sure that if you get a quote for a piece, that it is current to when you want to actually put the money down towards it.
Instead of stainless steel, many artists prefer to use an aluminum alloy for metal artwork. It will have a very similar finished look, with the silvery shine and modern edge, but it is a lot easier to work with. There are high quality aluminum products on the market to artists that don't require special surfacing, and are often more economical for the end consumer as well as for the artist. If you are attached to this look and are leaning towards steel, talk with an expert designer or metal artwork specialist to know what is best in your circumstance.
Copper artwork is one that withstands ages, and has the ability to go into many home styles. If you have a more country or traditional home design instead of modern, you might consider a copper metal artwork piece. It has a color of its own, and can have natural variances in it that many people appreciate. This type also tends to take on different shades in different lighting environments, so that means that your piece could have a unique personality at different types of the day when the sun and lighting change. As you are familiar with the statue of liberty, copper has a tendency to turn greenish after exposure and time. If you are fine with this, that's great. However many people want their copper piece to stay looking that nice autumn orange shine! Make sure your manufacturer or artist uses a high quality finishing lacquer for your metal artwork to maintain the proper coloring. Once it has started to turn, there is little you can do to reverse it. Make sure that if you are planning to use the piece outdoors or in another exposed environment that your piece is properly protected with high quality gloss finishing.
With any of these basic materials, some people appreciate how heat gives natural color variances in metal artwork. You can also have a piece painted with finishes and designs that match your space. You may also consider metal artwork that combines aluminum with copper, or aluminum with painted pieces. There are a lot of options, but the piece will be sure to add energy to any office, restaurant, or home atmosphere.
