An exceptional figure of Tibet by Nuhsh
Chopel's interest in the subject matter of stage six of the Khor Lo is thus without doubt, but in arguing the case for his authorship of the Tharpa choeling mural analysis of the formal signature is more conclusive. From a stylistic point of view, the Tharpa Choeling painting bears comparison with Chopel's sketchbook which includes studies of naked couples drawn with an economical and vivid use of line. Their simplicity is reminiscent of the modernist paintings by Santiniketan artists such as Nandalal Bose, who sought to expunge the heavy elaborateness of academic realism from his work. Chopel's sketchbook also includes line drawings of shooting figures which may have been preparatory sketches for the realm of the battling demi-gods in the Tharpa Choeling wheel. This area of the wheel contams a unique fusion of tradition and modernity with some figures portrayed in ancient Tibetan warriors' dress and armed with bows and arrows alongside Spitfire-like aircraft, howitzers and the uniforms of twentieth-century warfare. These incursions from the modern world reflect the imagery of Indian newspaper photography and cartoons, sources readily available to an artist based in Kalimpong or Darjeeling. It seems plausible that just a few years before the Second World War, and only two decades after the First, Gendun Chopel (or whoever was the designer of the Tharpa Choeling wheel) attempted to demonstrate the relevance of Buddhism in the modern world. According to Buddhist precepts, the demi-gods were doomed to be reborn to fight eternal battles in this section of the karmic cycle because they had envied the power of the gods in a previous life. In the Tibetan Buddhist scheme of things, Hitler and Mussolini would be justly consigned to this kind of hell. Could anyone other than a man who had read of the political turmoil of Europe (and who became a Communist sympathizer) have produced such a commentary? And who other than someone who had been exposed to the modernist imagery of India could have produced such a novel reworking of a 'traditional' Tibetan image? Such a figure would be a rarity in both pre- and post-1959 Tibet. Gendun Chopelis one of the few who could fit the description.
Chopel's radical pictorialization is linked with two strands of modernist art practice which can be broadly defined as stylistic and ideological. His treatment of the body demonstrates the formal lessons of modernism, with the essential components pared down and conceptualized, rather than naturalistically observed. On the other hand, the use of imagery drawn from photographic sources and the actualite of news media reflects a modernist desire to comment on contemporary political realities, as was the case in Picasso and Braque's newsprint collages at the time of the First World War. For Indian modernists, the production of a non-traditional art form was a means of expressing both political and aesthetic independence from the colonial past.
Gendun Chopel's experiments, in which the bonds of tradition began to be dissolved, could have been the precursors for a gradual change bringing modernity into the images of Tibet. Instead the events of the 1950s have created a strange inversion in Tibetan visual culture. The official image of 'Tibet' in exile reifies tradition and ignores the legacy of Gendun Chopel. Yet in the 'Tibet' of the Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China, the potentiality of modernism has been grasped by Tibetan artists and activated as a tool of political and creative survival. It is this counter-narrative which we must now turn to.
