China - From the Land of Bicycles to the Fastest Growing Economy by Ryan Fyfe
China is a country that has a long history. Say China and the first thing that comes to your mind is the Great Wall which can be seen even from the moon! But there is a lot more to see and do in the People's Republic of China.
To begin with, it is the third largest country in the world and apparently it is slightly larger than the United States of America. Currently the country occupies about 9,596, 960 sq km in area. Being the largest country in Asia in area and population, China has one of the oldest civilizations in the world. Mandarin, the original language of China is one of the oldest in the world too. China has also advanced technologically and economically over the years. Culturally, the whole of East Asia has adopted Chinese culture, religion and similar writing methods.
Sounds interesting? Yes, it surely does but before you make the trip to china you need to know more about the climate and the places to visit here. Travelling in china is relatively easy. The country is very tourist friendly and the government firmly believes in the 'harmony' policy for its citizens and the foreign tourists visiting the country.
As a tourist you will be well looked after. You can visit China throughout the summer season as the winters in parts of China can be really cold. The climate in Beijing is often compared to Washington DC. But if one wants to go mountain climbing then a proper research on the climate needs to be done.
And now coming to the places one must visit, there is a lot to see and do. You cannot miss out on the following:
Beijing: It is one place which is a must see. It is here that one will get the flavour of the country's politics and culture intermingled with the now modern city. Beijing is always brimming with activities. The best places to visit here are the Tiananmen Square, the Great Wall, Ming Tomb, Summer Palace, Lama Temple and the Capital Museum. Another reason not to miss out on Beijing is that it is one of the six oldest cities in the country and likewise, in the world. You can stay at the Orange hotel or Michael's House Hotel while you are here.
Shanghai: This is also one of the ancient cities. It is also the largest one which is divided into two: Puxi and Pudong. You must see the Shanghai Bund, the Jade Buddha temple; Shanghai Yuyuan Garden, and the Shanghai Museum amongst the many. Pudong Shangri-La and St. Regis, Shanghai are good options for accommodations.
Guilin: It is located by the banks of the Li River and is known for its scenic locations. The landscape is flanked by mountains and rock climbing zones, crystal clear water bodies and caves. Here you have the opportunity to visit the Chinese tribes of Hui, Yao and Zhuang etc. You must visit the reed flute cave, the elephant trunk hill, the seven star parks and the famed Guilin Folded brocade hill. Eva Inn is a famous place to stay in here.
If you do visit the Yangtze River, you must go cruising on the river. The ferry across the river is said to be one of the most romantic things you can do on this trip. It is apparently a long ride on the river spanning 6300 km and is shorter only to Amazon and the Nile.
Lhasa Tibet: This is the closest you can come to heaven when you do visit Tibet. Nestled in between the Himalayas, it is a civilization far removed from the hustle bustle of our daily lives. Lhasa is the cultural and the political capital of Tibet. Here you must see the Potala palace, Drepung and Sera Monasteries and the Jokhang Temple. The house of Shambala and Thangka Hotel are good places.
While in Tibet, make it a point to visit Shigatse, as it is the second biggest city in Tibet.
