Cheraman Perumal Mosque - Preserving Centuries Old Kerala Architecture by Pushpitha Wijesinghe
Kerala is a state of India nestled along the southern coast of the peninsula. The majority of Kerala's population follow Hinduism while the state's second most popular religion is Islam. The Muslims in Kerala have a culture of their own referred to as Malayalam culture, which is influenced by Arabian elements. Around 1400 years ago Kerala welcomed Islamic religion, and the first mosque of India was built in Kerala. Today this mosque is known as Cheraman Perumal Mosque or Cheraman Juma Masjid.
Cheraman Perumal Mosque is the oldest mosque in India and it is said to be the second oldest in the world where Jumu'ah prayers are held. Jumu'ah is the congregational prayer of the Muslims held every Friday. It is believed that Cheraman Perumal Mosque was built in the contemporary times of the Prophet Muhammad, the founder of Islam. What's more, relics of some of his important disciples are enshrined within the mosque.
More than thousand years ago Kodungallur was the capital in Kerala where a king named Cheraman Perumal ruled. Originally a Hindu devotee, King Cheraman saw a metaphorical dream that caused him later to turn his faith towards Islam. After he left on his pilgrimage to Mecca the king was christened as Thajudeen and formally became Islamic. He then built the Cheraman Perumal Mosque in Kodungallur, which was later acknowledged as India's first mosque.
The history of the mosque dates back to the early seventh century. The original edifice followed the Kerala architectures, where timber roofs with tiles and fences were used. A traditional tank reminiscent of the tank of a Hindu temple was also built here for ablutions. The mosque faces east, unlike any other mosques you find today, while the Mihrab faces the west. Mihrab is the ornate niche found in the interior wall of a prayer hall that indicates the direction of the Mecca.
Cheraman Perumal Mosque takes pride in its Kerala traditions, signified by its big brass oil lamps burning an everlasting flame. Even the Minbar, the raised platform where Islamic preachers deliver sermons, is exquisitely crafted in rosewood flaunting traditional artistry. The Qiblah Wall which holds the Mihrab too is adorned in ornate decorations.
While the original mosque followed Kerala style, the renovation of the mosque in 1984 gave it a modern facelift. Today you will see the basic elements of a mosque, such as the central dome and minarets soaring from behind the remaining portion of the ancient building.
